HIGHLIGHTS

  • South Africa, Kenya and AU put forward own peace plans and initiatives for South Sudan in addition to new IGAD proposal.

  • Fighting in South Sudan now affecting five out of the ten states. Over 28,000 South Sudanese refugees (a 40 per cent increase since April) received in neighbouring countries in the last two months.

  • Food security expected to deteriorate in eastern parts of the Horn region from JuneAugust while average August harvests are expected in the western sector of the Horn.

  • UNHCR reports 180 per cent increase in number of Burundians who have fled into neighbouring countries since April 2015.

  • Djibouti seeks US$27 million to respond to growing number of refugees from Yemen.

  • Insecurity continues to impact delivery of basic services in north-eastern Kenya.

  • WHO and health authorities report cholera outbreaks contained in four affected countries.

  • Increasing humanitarian needs forecast over next quarter, yet current appeals significantly underfunded, warns OCHA.
